Brown lauded at Mansfield rally

Chilly and gloomy outside, the climate was warm and friendly Sunday afternoon inside Brinkerhoff Elementary School for a homecoming rally for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Sherrod Brown.

The bleachers were full of Brown supporters in the tiny gym at the school at Highland and Euclid where Brown and his brothers, Bob and Charlie, attended.

Their mother, Emily Brown, greeted old friends and met new people in the lobby before Sherrod, his wife Connie Schultz and members of the campaign arrived.

Emily Brown told how each year before the Cleveland Indians' home opener her husband, Dr. Charles Brown, would write the school's principal, a Mr. Sheets, asking him to please excuse the Brown boys as their grandmother had died. The principal got a laugh out of the running joke, she said.

Volunteer Esther Farley passed out buttons and bumper stickers. She said she was helping out "because I believe in Sherrod Brown's agenda and his issues. He's honest and has a good record. Ohio needs him."

The Mansfield woman said she's been active with the Democratic party for about 10 years, "when Republicans stopped being someone I wanted to vote for."
