New TV Spot:  DeWine Voted To Eliminate “Countless” Jobs

AMHERST, OH -- The Sherrod Brown for Senate Campaign today announced a new television advertisement highlighting Senator DeWine's record of voting to eliminate countless jobs and keep wages low.  Since DeWine began his second term in office, Ohio lost more than 200,000 manufacturing jobs, wages stagnated, and the cost-of-living skyrocketed.  DeWine supported the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), voted for every trade pact offered by the Bush administration, and voted against overtime pay protection and raising the minimum wage.  DeWine accepted more than $1 million from companies that outsource U.S. jobs.

"While he rewarded special interests with subsidies and the rich with tax breaks, Senator DeWine voted for policies that eliminated countless jobs and kept workers' pay low," said Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for U.S. Representative Sherrod Brown (D-OH).  "Mike DeWine turned his back on Ohio workers when times got tough, and instead sided with multinational corporations that sent jobs overseas.  Sherrod Brown introduced legislation to reward patriot corporations that create jobs in the United States, and fought to lower costs and raise pay for middle class families."

DeWine voted against overtime pay protection and nine times voted against raising the minimum wage.  He also failed to provide middle class families with relief for a rising cost-of-living.

DeWine voted for a Medicare bill that left seniors with gaps in coverage totaling more than $2,000 and banned the agency from negotiating for lower drug prices like the VA does.  DeWine supported a GOP energy bill which provided billions of dollars in subsidies to the oil and gas industry but led to an increase in the price of gasoline of more than 75 cents.

Brown is one of Congress' leading proponents of fair trade policy. Last year he led the bipartisan opposition in Congress against the Central American Free Trade Agreement, and in 1994 he stood up to the president of his own party in opposing NAFTA.  He introduced legislation that would ban the importation of goods produced in sweatshops, and also an original co-sponsor of the Patriot Corporations for America Act, which would use tax cuts and federal contracts to reward corporations that create jobs in the United States.

Brown fought to lower costs for Ohio families by voting against the GOP energy bills that led to rising gas prices, and the Medicare bill which failed to lower prescription drug costs and left seniors with gaps in coverage. He introduced a "Path to Opportunity" for middle class families that would provide them tax breaks to help pay for child and elderly care, homeownership, and higher education.
