Brown Calls for Increased Access to Higher Education

DeWine voted to raise tuition costs, increase student debt

AKRON, OH -- U.S. Representative Sherrod Brown (D-OH) was joined by students and parents at the University of Akron today for a news conference to discuss how to lower tuition costs and to increase access to higher education for all Ohioans.  By voting to cut higher education funding and against funding for student loans and college assistance programs, incumbent Republican Senator Mike DeWine made college less affordable and accessible for Ohioans.

"Skyrocketing tuition rates are driving talented students from Ohio and saddling middle class families with debt," said Representative Brown.  "When it comes to paying for higher education, Senator DeWine has left students behind.  We must provide students with every opportunity and incentive to succeed here in Ohio, so that they will stay and reinvest in the state."

Tuition costs at four-year public universities in Ohio have more than doubled since 2000, and the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education recently gave Ohio an "F" for college affordability.  Tuition at Ohio public universities is well above the national average, but the percentage of Ohioans with college degrees is below that average.  DeWine opposed more than $11 billion for higher education and voted against funding for Pell Grants, student loans, work study, technology training, and college assistance programs.

DeWine Favors Wealthy Heirs Over Ohio Students

AMHERST -- Less than a month after voting to eliminate the college tuition tax credit, Republican incumbent Senator Mike DeWine is expected to vote Thursday to repeal the estate tax, which benefits only the wealthiest 0.05% of families in America.

"For many Ohioans, sending your kids to college is the foundation for the American dream," Brown said. "Instead of helping students and parents afford tuition, Mike DeWine wants to help expand trust funds for ultra-wealthy heirs."

In 2003, the college tuition tax credit helped 134,885 Ohio students attend college. But only 896 of Ohio's wealthiest families had to pay any estate tax that year.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, repealing the estate tax could cost close to $1 trillion between 2012 and 2021. Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) recently came out in opposition to repealing the estate tax because of the extreme cost.

"Mike DeWine wants hard working Ohio families to pay for trillion-dollar giveaways to his millionaire friends," Brown said. "Instead of investing in Ohio families, he's lining the pockets of rich campaign donors."

Brown Calls President’s ‘07 Budget Immoral

AVON, OH--Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today called the president's proposed FY 2007 budget a set of failed priorities for Ohio families.

The budget, presented to Congress today, calls for drastic funding cuts in health care, energy, veterans, education, and job creation programs. At the same time, the president is demanding that Congress make permanent his tax cuts.

"Budgets are moral documents," Brown said. "The president wants to cut programs vital to millions of Ohioans to pay for billionaire tax cuts. Clearly Republican leadership does not share the same values as Ohio families."

Today the president proposed to:

*  Cut $36 billion from Medicare over the next five years, and $105 billion over ten

*  Cut or flat fund energy programs specifically designed to help Ohio industries improve energy efficiency and cut costs

*  Underfund No Child Left Behind by $15.4 billion

*  Cut health care for Ohio's veterans

*  Cut $198 million from children's hospitals
