Senator extols candidacy of Brown at Valley rally

Youngstown Vindciator

AUSTINTOWN — U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said it is imperative that Ohioans elect U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown as its next U.S. senator because the Republican-led federal government is in crisis mode with out-of-control spending, abuse of power and little to no support for the middle class,

Clinton, of New York, a potential 2008 presidential candidate, joined Brown, D-13th, of Avon, a fellow Democrat, at a rally Saturday at Austintown Fitch High School auditorium. Also speaking were local Democratic elected officials along with television actors Luke Perry, best known for "Beverly Hills 90210," and Adam Brody of "The O.C."

The rally was among 11 stops for Brown between Thursday and today to discuss the cost of higher education tuition, how that restricts some from going to college and how it saddles those who do attend with a large amount of debt. The Austintown stop was the only one for Clinton, the former first lady.

About 1,000 attended.

Senate foes bring blitz, glitz to region; DeWine, Brown war in Toledo, Bowling Green

Toledo Blade

After weeks of bombing northwest Ohio with televised attack ads, Mike DeWine and Sherrod Brown brought their U.S. Senate ground war to northwest Ohio yesterday — complete with standing ovations, mobs of cameramen, celebrity cameos, soaring rhetoric, scuffling supporters, and constant reminders of the stakes in their nationally watched race.

...Mr. Brown drew larger, more partisan crowds. In the Bowling Green student union, 300 people overflowed the available chairs.

They laughed when Mr. Carville, a Democratic strategist who worked for President Clinton, said he enjoyed undergraduate studies so much “I was there for, like, 11 years.” They roared when he called Mr. DeWine “an affable puppet to power” in Washington.

Mr. Perry jogged in late, wearing work boots, blue jeans, a baseball cap, and a long-sleeved John Deere T-shirt. He lamented the cost of tuition, which he said kept him from attending college after graduating from high school in Fredericktown, Ohio, and he urged the audience not to vote “for fear.”

Celebrity sightings are routine for big campaigns, but Mr. Perry’s ties to Mr. Brown are not. Mr. Brown’s father was a doctor who made house calls and sometimes delivered babies — including Mr. Perry. Later in life, Dr. Brown removed an arrow from Mr. Perry’s forehead in an emergency room.
Mr. Brown started his speech with that story. He finished it with a wide-ranging assault on Mr. DeWine that included health care, energy, the Iraq war, and support for the middle class.

Brown says drug plan not serving seniors well

From Toledo Blade:

U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown (D., Avon) brought a familiar theme and a familiar sidekick to Toledo yesterday, and together, they picked on a familiar target: the federal prescription drug benefit.

Mr. Brown, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R., Cedarville) this fall, said the Medicare Part D plan was "written by the drug industry" and said it was "just not serving seniors as well as it should."

...Joining him were Moses Ham, a beneficiary who said he couldn't afford his medicine after he reached the "doughnut" threshhold, and Dr. Johnathon Ross, a Toledo physician who said the Medicare plan shows government leaders "seem more concerned about corporate profits than about the health of the American people."

Dr. Ross and Mr. Brown also denounced the plan in Toledo seven months ago, when they said sign-up was confusing seniors.

Mixing polka and politics

WAPAKONETA - With polka music reverberating in the building, Bo Huenke sat down at a chicken dinner with senatorial candidate Sherrod Brown to chew over political issues.

Brown, a Democratic Lorain County congressman, stopped at the St. Joseph Parish Fourth of July Festival at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds as part of his campaigning for the U.S. Senate Tuesday. He also made a stop in New Knoxville before ending his day in Norwalk for fireworks.

"It is pretty clear that the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives have betrayed the middle class. The drug industry writes Medicare prescription drug laws. The oil industry dictates energy policy," Brown said.

Brown is running against incumbent Republican Mike DeWine, whom he says received thousands of dollars in contributions from the large companies.

"He really has a feel for what middle America has," Huenke said.

Huenke, of Gomer, works for Honda in its Anna engine plant and said he attended the festival for the games and food.

"He is just a common man. He sees what the Republicans are doing in Congress and he wants to go to the Senate side to make a difference there," Huenke said.

Two Counties Down, 86 To Go

The Red Hatted LadyBugs of Putnam County assured Connie she's not old enough to wear a red hat -- yet.
Betty Hauenstein, a member of the Red Hatted Ladybugs, shows off her red hatted socks at the Putnam County Fair.
Ann Dillinger, from Ottawa, showed up to say hi to Connie at the Putnam County Fair.
Nothing like a room full of community acitivists to get the conversation going -- this time at Woodlands Restaurant in Findlay.

I was thrilled when Sherrod decided to run for the U.S. Senate, but I have to admit I had some adjusting to do. The hardest part, after taking a leave of absence from my job at The Plain Dealer, was figuring out how I could best help with the campaign. I've been a journalist all my adult life, and for the last three or so years I've been paid to give my opinion, week in and week out. I wasn't sure what else I could do besides give Sherrod the same free and abundant advice he's been getting from me since the day we met.

What a deal, eh?

Fortunately, we came up with a better idea. We decided I could draw on what I've learned over the years as a journalist, but also what I know as the daughter of proud, working class parents from small-town Ashtabula.

I moved away from Ashtabula when I was 18, but over the years I realized I never really left. You are who you come from, and in many ways I will always be that small-town girl where everybody knew my name and who to call if I was even thinking of getting into trouble.

There are towns like Ashtabula all across Ohio, full of hard-working people who still believe in the power of community and friendship. So that's where I'm headed - to all those communities that are the lifeblood of this great state of ours. We're calling it our Hometown Tour.  Two Counties Down, 86 To Go

This is my first journal entry from the road. The idea is for me to be Sherrod's eyes and ears in all the nooks and crannies of this 88-county race. We want to hear what's on your minds.

Candidate Brown represents middle class, spouse asserts

From Findlay Courier:

If Connie Schultz gets her way, newspapers across the country will run two headlines on Nov. 8, the day after the general election.

The first headline will say, "Democrats take back the House and Senate," and the other, "Ohio turns from red to blue."

To help make those headlines a reality, Schultz is visiting towns throughout Ohio to explain why her husband, Sherrod Brown, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, is the right choice.

After visiting the Putnam County Fair on Thursday, she stopped in Findlay at the Woodland Restaurant on South Main Street to talk about her husband's platform and vision.

"If you ask anybody, they'd say education, health care and jobs are the most important issues in this race," Schultz said.
