Brown brings discussion to Athens
The Athens Messenger
As an Ohio congressman, Sherrod Brown often holds informal roundtable discussions to keep in touch with the thinking of his constituents.
Saturday was Athens' turn.
Brown, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, hosted such an event in Athens City Council chambers for the community and its leaders.
"It's the only way you can learn about what concerns people. I've held several of these for him, and the main purpose is to listen. That is paramount," explained Brown's wife, Connie Schultz, who accompanied her husband during his visit to Athens.
Brown faces incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine in the November general election.
Although Brown's informal chat in Athens featured an almost exclusive Democratic audience, several community leaders expressed concerns about health care, education funding, sustainable energy, the war in Iraq, federal mandates for local governments and other topics.
"I want to hear from you what we need to do for this area," Brown said.

Brown touts his platform and campaign in Athens visit
The Athens News
Senatorial candidate and incumbent U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown offered insight into his political views with a roundtable of fellow Democratic elected officials and party activists at the Athens Municipal Building Saturday afternoon.
...Asked by Kathy Galt of Athens how failings of the Bush Administration could be held to account if Democrats make gains in November, the congressman said he believes in focusing on fixing problems rather than "retribution."
"We don't govern very long if we only go after them," said Brown, who colored his approach to possible investigative congressional hearings called by the new Democratic majority as "let the chips fall where they may."
However, Brown freely lambasted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, saying it had been "captured by drug-company interests," and that he would like to eliminate direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs.
Pastor Steve Knape of Christ Lutheran Church in Athens asked Brown how Democrats could "reclaim the language of faith in politics as an alternative to what the Republicans say is faith."
The congressman replied that although media tend to focus on abortion and gay rights as the prime moral matters of the day, issues such as raising the minimum wage, reversing tax cuts for the rich, and disallowing union lockouts are moral issues, too, and should be cast accordingly.

Democrats push for veterans’ benefits
From Cincinnati Enquirer:
Veterans are being neglected by the government, some Ohio Democrats and veterans claimed at a forum Tuesday.
"The government will pay for the war but won't take care of our nation's veterans," said Max Cleland, former U.S. senator, Veterans Administration (now Veterans Affairs) administrator from 1977-81 and disabled veteran of the Vietnam War.
"This administration is spending $8 billion for the war in Iraq but will underfund $6 billion for the VA budget for the next five years."
More than 50 people showed up at the Public Library downtown Tuesday evening for the veterans forum, hosted by U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is running for the U.S. Senate. Brown, Cleland and Iraq veteran Paul Hackett addressed issues regarding U.S. veterans, such as funding for proper health care for those affected by war.
"There's real professional care that needs to be delivered," Cleland said. "Not just physical wounds but the hidden wounds of war ... You've seen the world explode before you and that is very difficult to handle - sometimes you can't do it alone."
Brown called on Congress to do three things: repeal the Disabled Veterans Tax, seek to fully fund veterans' health care and pass a GI Bill for the 21st century.

Wife of Sherrod Brown visits commissioners
From the Ironton Tribune:
Ask a Lawrence Countian for an opinion and you’ll likely get one; extend a Lawrence County officeholder the opportunity to give opinions on a range of subjects and you just might be sitting for a while.
Connie Schultz, wife of U.S. Congressman and Democratic senatorial candidate Sherrod Brown, paid a visit to the Lawrence County Commission meeting Thursday as part of her cross-state “hometown tour.”
Schultz extended an invitation to commissioners to speak their minds about what is important to their constituents.
“Tell me what you want me to tell Sherrod,” she said.
They took her up on her offer. Commissioner George Patterson told Schultz he thought southern Ohio had been forgotten in the past by the government officials in Columbus and that the region has suffered for it.
“I don’t think Columbus understands us,” he told her.
Not only do those elected officials fail to understand what is important to this part of the state, they usually fall short in passing along funding for economic development and basics such as infrastructure. Patterson pointed to the Chesapeake Bypass as one instance where Columbus made promises, cooled its governmental heels and eventually came through with only a portion of its promise some 40 years late.
Patterson recalled he was in a meeting with state officials once to discuss the bypass and one state official fell asleep during the county’s presentation.
“That’s significant, that’s shameful,” Schultz said. She pledged Brown, if elected to represent all of the state, would not forget parts of it.
