Brown Calls Bush Speech Hollow Rhetoric on Failed Policies
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, March 20
AMHERST--At a Cleveland City Club event today, President George W. Bush attempted to reverse failing support for the war in Iraq. The event was not attended by Ohio Republican Senators Mike DeWine, George Voinovich, Republican Congressman Robert LaTourette, or Republican Ohio Governor Bob Taft.
Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain County)--who is running against Senator Mike DeWine for the U.S. Senate seat--has been traveling around Ohio in recent months talking about national security, job creation, education, and health care. Brown said the overwhelming message echoed across the state is a call for change in 2006.
"I'm not surprised by the absence of Republican leadership at the president's event today," Brown said. "They know what the rest of us in Ohio know--the Bush/DeWine policies hurt Ohio families."

Brown Responds to Bush Fundraiser for DeWine
LORAIN COUNTY -- Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain County) responded to President Bush's Indian Hill fundraiser this evening for Mike DeWine.
"President Bush is in Ohio tonight to thank Mike DeWine for his vote on the Medicare privatization bill written by the drug companies, his vote on the energy bill written by the oil companies, and his support for privatizing Social Security," said Brown. "But when I travel across the state, Ohioans thank me for fighting on the other side of every one of those issues."
Brown is returning home to Lorain County today after a statewide tour earlier this week. He met with senior citizens, students, teachers, workers, and labor and community leaders.

Bush visits today to help keep Republican control of CongressBY MALIA RULON | ENQUIRER WASHINGTON BUREAU
WASHINGTON - President Bush will be in Ohio today for the second time this month, this time to headline an evening fundraiser in Indian Hill for Sen. Mike DeWine's re-election campaign.
This must be an election year.
The White House isn't up for grabs this year, but the governor's mansion and the control of both the House and Senate are.
Ohio, the battleground state that gave Bush his victory in November 2004, is once again in the national political spotlight - and the voters here could determine whether Bush has a Democratic or Republican Congress for the last two years of his presidency.
DeWine, who broke with his party to join a bipartisan compromise on judicial nominees, has been criticized by conservative Republicans and is considered among the most vulnerable incumbents in the closely divided Senate.
Bush's visit to campaign for DeWine - and an earlier fundraiser for him held in Washington by Vice President Dick Cheney - shows that the significance of DeWine's seat isn't lost on the White House, which is committed to doing whatever it can to help him keep it...
...DeWine is expected to face Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown of northern Ohio this fall in a high-spending battle that is likely to produce more high-profile visits to the state for other campaign events.

Bush’s Budget is Morally Reprehensible
This just went out to our e-mail list from Sherrod. Make sure to sign up for our e-mail list to get the latest updates from the campaign.
Dear Friend,
President Bush presented the details of his 2007 budget to Congress yesterday. He called for drastic funding cuts in health care, energy, veterans, education, and job creation programs. At the same time, he demanded that Congress make his tax cuts permanent.
Budgets are moral documents. The president wants to cut programs vital to millions of Ohioans to pay for tax cuts to his billionaire friends. Clearly the Republican leadership does not share the same values as Ohio families.
Consider the consequences if this morally reprehensible budget were to be passed into law:
Seniors already struggling with a broken Medicare drug plan would face $36 billion in cuts to Medicare over the next five years, and $105 billion over ten years.
Ohio veterans would see cuts in health care funding and $198 million would be cut from children's hospitals.
Taxpayers and school districts already burdened by unfunded mandates would see No Child Left Behind underfunded by $15.4 billion.
Even the few Americans who still take Bush as a man of his word must wince at this fact:
Despite calling for an end to America's "addiction to oil" in the State of the Union just last week, Bush proposed cutting programs to help Ohio industries improve energy efficiency.
This budget is not just irresponsible, it's immoral. This year is about choices. Will those of us who represent Ohio stand up for Ohio families, or give in to the demands of drug and oil lobbyists? The moral choice is clear -- Ohio families deserve better than the president's proposed budget.
I will fight for Ohio's families and a budget that represents our values.
We're in this together.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
Brown Calls President’s ‘07 Budget Immoral
AVON, OH--Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today called the president's proposed FY 2007 budget a set of failed priorities for Ohio families.
The budget, presented to Congress today, calls for drastic funding cuts in health care, energy, veterans, education, and job creation programs. At the same time, the president is demanding that Congress make permanent his tax cuts.
"Budgets are moral documents," Brown said. "The president wants to cut programs vital to millions of Ohioans to pay for billionaire tax cuts. Clearly Republican leadership does not share the same values as Ohio families."
Today the president proposed to:
* Cut $36 billion from Medicare over the next five years, and $105 billion over ten
* Cut or flat fund energy programs specifically designed to help Ohio industries improve energy efficiency and cut costs
* Underfund No Child Left Behind by $15.4 billion
* Cut health care for Ohio's veterans
* Cut $198 million from children's hospitals

Sherrod Brown Responds to State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, DC--Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Avon) responded to President Bush's State of the Union Address:
The president's speech tonight is about choices. Are those of us who represent Ohio going to side with the drug and insurance industries, or are we going to side with Ohio families?
For the first time in five years, the president has included health care as a central issue in his State of the Union Address--and it's about time. Since 2000, average premiums have increased by 73 percent, while nearly 50 million Americans do not have health insurance. And once again, the president fails to understand what Ohio families need.
