Sherrod Brown Announces Path to Opportunity for Middle Class Families

While DeWine helps rich get richer, Brown’s plan would help middle class families succeed

COLUMBUS, OH – On the front porch of the Bulgrin family’s Columbus home, U.S. Representative Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced his plan to put middle class families back on a path to opportunity. Ohio Republican incumbent Senator Mike DeWine has voted for tax cuts that reward the richest Americans with more than $1 trillion but failed to help middle class families meet a higher cost-of-living.  Brown, who has voted to cut taxes 33 times, announced a new plan that would offer middle class families a tax break for each changing phase of their lives.

“Instead of voting for policies that help the middle class, Senator DeWine voted to give tax breaks to millionaires,” said Brown. “It is time to put families back on a path to opportunity in Ohio. These targeted tax cuts will ensure that instead of treading water to keep their jobs and pay their bills, Ohioans that work hard and play by the rules will be given the tools to succeed.”

While they are paying record health care, education, and energy costs, Ohioans are making lower wages than most Americans.  Last week, it was reported that families in Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dayton were earning some of the lowest median household incomes of any residents of any large or medium-sized cities in the nation [Dayton Daily News 8/30/06].  Many Ohioans are working multiple jobs simply to ensure that their wages are keeping up with inflation.

Brown’s plan would provide a tax cut for each major phase of a middle class family’s life.

The plan includes:

  • A new baby tax credit
Provides:  $1,000 for each of the first three years of a child’s life
  • A child care tax credit
Provides:  All Ohio families would now be able to get a tax break of up to 35% for child care – nearly doubling the top benefit to $2,100.
  • A college tuition tax credit
Provides:  A super-sized tax deduction of $10,000 a year (or a $3,000 credit) for tuition and books for up to four years of post-secondary education.
  • A first home tax credit
Provides:  $3,000 for individuals and $6,000 for married couples purchasing their first home.
  • An elder care tax credit
Provides:  Expands the maximum elder care credit to more than $1,200 per year. Brown’s plan would be fully funded by rolling back existing tax breaks and giveaways for special interests.

“Mike DeWine has helped special interests and the richest families get even richer while failing to raise wages and lower costs for middle class families,” stated Brown. “The middle class, not special interests, are the economic engine of Ohio and America.  Our economy will expand only when we make life affordable again for families.”
