Candidates address NAACP

From Canton Repository:

The frontlines in the battle for the governorship of Ohio were in Stark County on Saturday afternoon, as gubernatorial candidates Ken Blackwell and Ted Strickland each tried to portray the other’s record or policies as less friendly to the interests of the black community.

...Separately, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Ohio, Congressman Sherrod Brown, told the NAACP he would fight for fair trade agreements and that he had opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement. He called such agreements “job killers.”

Brown said he supported an increase in the minimum wage, restructuring the No Child Left Behind law, embryonic stem cell research and undoing the tax cuts for the richest 1 percent of Americans. He said more funding for education could come from reversing those tax cuts and ending the $2 billion a week spent on the Iraq conflict. He said his Republican opponent, Sen. Mike DeWine, has supported Bush unconditionally.

DeWine did not appear at the NAACP convention.
