Ohio’s Largest Latino Newspaper, La Prensa, Endorses Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate

In this election, the Latino Community will play an important voting role throughout the United States, including in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, where it is estimated that the Latino Community is well over a million strong.

...The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda provides a scorecard where they track how our legislatures vote on Latino issues. […] For example, last year’s scorecard showed that U.S. Congressman Sherrod Brown (OH-District 13), who is now running for the U.S. Senate, scored a 100% when voting on issues that have an impact on the Latino Community, while U.S. Senator Mike DeWine’s score for 2005 was 50%.

...Getting back to Congressman Sherrod Brown—he has always made it a point to makes sure that his staff had representation from the minority communities. Not long ago, one of his Latino staff members – Diana Meleti – was the 2005 recipient of the Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Award, which is given to a Latino leader who continually dedicates their time to improve the quality of life for Latinos throughout Ohio. In 2004, Brown was given the Nuestro Familia Award which was presented by the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs. This award is given to a non Latino individual or organization that has made a positive impact on the lives of the Latino Community in Ohio. […]

I have been privileged to watch many of the candidates who are running for office and I am proud to say that I am most impressed with Ted Strickland, Sherrod Brown, and Betty Sutton (for U.S. Congress).

Toledo Blade: Brown for Senate

Toledo Blade

Strip away misleading rhetoric about body armor for the troops, and Ohio's race for the U.S. Senate boils down to this: The incumbent, Republican Mike DeWine, has been a loyal vote in Washington for President Bush and a host of failed and misguided foreign and domestic policies for the past six years.

Getting the country back on the right track won't be easy, but change has to start in the halls of Congress, which is why we endorse Democrat Sherrod Brown to replace Mr. DeWine in the Senate.

Mr. Brown, a seven-term House member, has the experience, intelligence, and tenacity necessary to get things done in Washington, and his positions on the major issues - tax cuts, the war in Iraq, and trade - are in most cases diametrically opposed to those of the incumbent.

Moreover, he has not succumbed to the insiderism that grips veteran officials who, like Mr. DeWine, forget they're supposed to be working for the people rather than advancing special interests.

In addition, Mr. Brown is anything but a stranger to the broader public, having served as Ohio secretary of state from 1983 to 1991 and before that eight years in the General Assembly. A Mansfield native and a graduate of Yale University, he now lives in Avon and represents the 13th congressional district, which extends from the Lorain area southeast below Cleveland into Summit County.

He also is the first truly competitive opponent to face Mr. DeWine, who easily dispatched storefront lawyer Joel Hyatt in 1994 and the overmatched Ted Celeste in 2000.
The fact that this race is a competitive one is testament to the remarkable change this year in Ohio's political landscape, dominated for the past 16 years by Mr. DeWine and his fellow Republicans. Needless to say, one-party rule has been stultifying for both the state and nation, and voters have an opportunity on Nov. 7 to change that.

On the major issues of this election, the contrast between the candidates is striking.
Mr. DeWine supported every one of Mr. Bush's tax cuts, even though they were tilted heavily in favor of the rich. Mr. Brown opposed the policy, not because tax cuts were involved but because he wanted to do more for the neglected middle class.

On Iraq, Mr. DeWine has supported the Bush Administration virtually chapter and verse. His membership on the Senate Intelligence Committee should have given him reason to doubt the President's claim of imminent danger, but even today he still clings to the political fiction that "everybody" believed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

On trade, Mr. DeWine has been a champion of global agreements that have resulted in the overseas outsourcing of American workers' jobs and the decline of domestic manufacturing.

While we do not believe global forces can, or should be, entirely reversed, Mr. Brown promises to be a countervailing voice in doing all that can be done to retain jobs, particularly in the kind of small manufacturing shops that often are ignored by government policy.

Most of all, Mr. Brown would provide vital oversight and persistent questioning of Bush Administration policies that has been nonexistent under the Republican regime in Washington.

It's too bad that this campaign has devolved into an angry exchange of TV spots about funding of body armor for U.S. troops overseas. Both candidates want to protect the troops, although Mr. Brown correctly points out that Mr. DeWine supported the administration's rush to send troops into combat even though the military services lacked sufficient armor both for personnel and their Humvees.

We have little confidence that Mr. DeWine would do anything to alter these and other misguided policies of an essentially rudderless administration.

Ohio needs an experienced and thoughtful agent of change in Washington and we believe voters will get one if they elect Sherrod Brown to the U.S. Senate.

Endorsement: Sherrod Brown is on the right side of the most important issues

Athens News

Our country faces seemingly endless problems and crises both at home and abroad in the next decade. How our representatives in Washington approach these problems should be uppermost in our thoughts when we cast our votes on Nov. 7.

With this in mind, responsible voters should tune out the distorted and dishonest attack ads and mailings from both parties in key races. Instead, examine the candidates' positions on crucial issues such as the war on terrorism, energy policy, global warming, economic policy and health care.

In every case, Sherrod Brown's positions suggest he would be more effective than incumbent U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine in dealing with these hugely imposing problems.

Ohio, take our word, Sherrod Brown right man for Senate seat

Lorain Morning Journal

Ohio, take our word, Sherrod Brown right man for Senate seat

Time and again voters in Lorain County have put their trust and their support behind Sherrod Brown. For 14 years now, they have repeatedly sent him to Congress to represent the 13th District -- seven terms in all.

That kind of staying power results from understanding the people, hearing their needs, fighting to solve their problems and working tirelessly to be their voice.

Now, Sherrod Brown, 54, of Avon, is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, and it only makes sense that the voters who have long benefited from his representation in Congress stand with him once again in the election on Nov. 7.

In the Senate, Brown can continue to press for the interests of working families, senior citizens and veterans. His expertise in health care and trade issues will be a valuable addition to the Senate as the nation continues its struggle with rising medical costs and a job-draining global economy.

Agree with him or not, Brown's opposition to the Iraq War and his views on security issues are thoughtful and a much-needed contribution as the nation navigates its way through the new perils of the 21st century world.

Winning election to the Senate requires support from all across the state, not just Brown's familiar turf in and around Lorain County. But this area's problems with lost jobs, a fraying infrastructure, economic uncertainty, runaway costs for health care and higher education are familiar problems all over Ohio. Brown understands those problems and he is committed to finding solutions that will be good for ordinary people.

These qualities that voters in Lorain County have found so valuable in Sherrod Brown should easily resonate with voters from the shore of Lake Erie all the way to the banks of the Ohio River.

That common interest adds strength to the statewide recognition Brown carries from his days as Ohio Secretary of State. As a consequence, Brown has given incumbent Republican Sen. Mike DeWine a close, hot race. That indicates Ohio is restless and ready for leadership of a kind not seen for more than a decade.

Mike DeWine has had 12 years to do his best for Ohio in the U.S. Senate. Now, our sense is that Ohioans want to do better. From all we've seen of Sherrod Brown close-up over the past 14 years, he is now the man for the job.

Voters in Lorain County and all across Ohio should elect Sherrod Brown to the U.S. Senate on Nov. 7.

Brown better choice for Senate

Sun Newspapers, Chagrin Valley Times endorse Brown, new direction

AMHERST, OH - Sherrod Brown received the endorsements of Sun Newspapers and the Chagrin Valley Times  -- 26 papers in total.  Sun Newspapers said Brown is a "feisty and independent voice for his constituents," and that DeWine doesn't "represent the majority of residents today in a state where jobs are evaporating along with optimism for the future."  The Chagrin Valley Times said Brown "has represented the interests of working families above special interests in Congress since 1992," and that voters could send a message "that they've had enough back-room deals with multinational energy corporations, the pharmaceutical industry, off-shore tax evaders and job exporters" by voting for Brown.

These endorsements come just as SurveyUSA released a new poll today which shows Brown leading by 14 points among likely voters, including a 22 point lead among independents.

The Sun Newspapers include The Sun Courier, the Nordonia Hills Sun, the Garfield-Maple Sun, The Twinsburg Sun, The Sun Messenger, the Euclid Sun Journal, the Sun Scoop Journal, the Bedford Sun Banner, The Sun Press, the Chagrin Herald Sun, the Solon Herald Sun, the West Geauga Sun, the News Sun, the Parma Sun Post, The Sun Star, The Sun Herald, The Sun, Brooklyn Sun Journal, the Lakewood Sun Post, the West Side Sun News, The Medina Sun, the West Summit Sun, the Brunswick Sun Times, the West Akron Sun and the Wadsworth Sun Banner.
