Labor Leaders, Local Workers Host “Workers for Sherrod” Tour Stop in Zanesville

ZANESVILLE, OH – Today, Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga, President of the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans Norm Wernet, and local United Steelworkers member Zach Carpenter hosted a “Workers for Sherrod” statewide tour stop in Zanesville.

The “Workers for Sherrod” statewide tour is highlighting Sherrod’s record delivering for Ohio workers and fighting for the Dignity of Work, the belief that hard work should pay off for everyone, with stops across Ohio. Ohio workers are lining up behind Sherrod, citing his fight to save the pensions of over 100,000 Ohio workers and his commitment to making sure every family has a path to the middle class.

“From taking on Wall Street and special interests to saving the pensions of more than 100,000 Ohioans – including 12,000 here in Zanesville – to standing up to his own party to block trade deals that are bad for our state, working people in Ohio can always count on Sherrod to be on our side,” said Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga.

“From introducing legislation that would strengthen Social Security and ensure benefits for Ohioans match the rising cost of living, to opposing efforts to raise the retirement age or privatize Social Security, Sherrod fights every day to protect all Ohio retirees and their earned pensions and savings,” said Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans President Norm Wernet.

“We see how Sherrod invests in the next generation through apprenticeship programs and summer manufacturing camps,” said United Steelworkers local member Zach Carpenter. “Here in Zanesville, Sherrod helped secure over a million dollars in funding for Zane State College to create hands-on and work-based advanced manufacturing training programs. His commitment to building Ohio’s manufacturing industry is making sure every family has a path to the middle class.”

Sherrod has always fought for workers and the Dignity of Work to make sure hard work pays off for everyone:

  • Sherrod led the fight to save the pensions of over 100,000 Ohioans through the Butch Lewis Act, named after an Ohio Teamster, including 12,000 active workers at Bimbo QSR at the Eastpointe Business Park in Zanesville.
  • Sherrod wrote and passed the FEND Off Fentanyl Act, a bipartisan bill to stop the flow of deadly fentanyl into Zanesville and Ohio communities across the state.
  • Sherrod secured $1 million in funding for Zane State College to create hands-on and work-based advanced manufacturing training programs.
  • Sherrod worked to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law with prevailing wage requirements, creating good-paying jobs for workers in the trades across Ohio rebuilding our infrastructure.
  • Sherrod introduced the Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights Act to expand pension and family leave benefits and give part-time workers more control over their schedule.
  • Sherrod has always stood up against bad trade deals like NAFTA that shipped Ohio jobs overseas and is fighting to make sure workers have a seat at the table for all trade agreements.
  • Sherrod introduced the Restoring Overtime Pay Act to enshrine overtime pay protections into law and expand who qualifies for overtime pay so millions more Americans are paid for the hours they work.
  • Sherrod is also working to grow the next generation of Ohio workers by organizing summer manufacturing camps across Ohio that give young people an opportunity to learn about a future in the industry.
