Nikki Haley “Rakes” Bernie Moreno For Insulting Ohioans And Mocking Ohio Women For Wanting To Make Their Own Health Care Decisions

COLUMBUS, OH – Nikki Haley joined the chorus of voices “rak[ing]” Bernie Moreno for insulting and mocking voters by calling Ohio women “a little crazy” for wanting to make their own health care decisions at a campaign event over the weekend. The comments were first reported by WCMH.
The Hill: Haley rakes Ohio Senate candidate for criticizing suburban women on abortion stance
Jared Gans – September 24, 2024
  • Former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley is going after Republican Ohio Senate nominee Bernie Moreno for comments he made concerning many suburban women’s views on abortion.
  • The Columbus-based NBC affiliate WCMH first reported a video recording from a town hall that Moreno gave in Warren County on Friday in which he said Democrats have many “single-issue voters,” especially with suburban women on abortion, which he called “a little crazy.”
  • “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … OK. It’s a little crazy by the way, but — especially for women that are like past 50 — I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you,’” he said.
  • Haley slammed Moreno’s comment in a post on X, suggesting that the comment could risk the election in a fierce race against incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D).
  • “Are you trying to lose the election? Asking for a friend. #Tonedeaf #DonLemonVibes,” Haley said, referring to comments former CNN anchor Don Lemon made last year saying that Haley, 52, wasn’t “in her prime.”
  • Moreno’s campaign did not comment on Haley’s criticism.
  • Voters in Ohio passed a ballot measure last year to enshrine protections for abortion up to the point of viability in the state constitution, comfortably approving it with a clear majority of the vote.
  • “The people of Ohio think women should have the power to make their own health care decisions, Bernie Moreno thinks he should. As a man over the age of 50, I care deeply about a woman’s right to make health care decisions for herself — for my daughters, my granddaughters, and all Ohio women, regardless of their age,” Brown said. “Despite the majority of Ohioans agreeing, Moreno has made it clear he would overturn the will of Ohioans by passing a national abortion ban.”

Washington Post: Democrats — and Nikki Haley — knock GOP Senate hopeful over suburban women comments
Patrick Svitek – September 24, 2024

  • Bernie Moreno, the Republican nominee for Senate in the battleground state of Ohio, is facing criticism from Democrats and a prominent fellow Republican over comments he made about suburban women and abortion.
  • Moreno, who is running against Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) in one of the most competitive Senate contests this fall, reportedly said at a recent campaign event that “a lot of suburban women” are singularly focused on abortion and that “it’s a little crazy.” He also said he does not think abortion is an issue for women who are older than 50.
  • “Are you trying to lose the election?” former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said Tuesday morning on X. “Asking for a friend.”
  • “You know, the left has a lot of single issue voters,” Moreno said in video published by the TV outlet. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … OK. It’s a little crazy by the way, but — especially for women that are like past 50 — I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”
  • Brown, in a statement Tuesday, argued that Moreno’s comment show he “thinks he knows better than the 57 percent of Ohioans who made themselves clear on this issue” — a reference to the level of support the ballot measure received.
  • Haley, the former U.N. ambassador who ran against former president Donald Trump’s for the 2024 presidential nomination, has long argued her party needs to do better with suburban female voters.
